From the Principal

Welcome from the Principal

I am delighted to offer this brief introduction to life at Sha Tin College. I hope our website provides a good overview of all that we do and encourages everyone associated with Sha Tin College to be actively involved in the life of the school. Our success is a result of the effective partnership between students, parents and teachers, the School Council and PTA. We aim to be an inclusive community.

Sha Tin College is a warm, welcoming and vibrant educational institution where the quality of relationships with all stakeholders is valued and nurtured. Visitors comment on the work ethic, sense of purpose and energy of staff and students alike. We have a long tradition of serving the community and achieving excellent examination results and producing well-rounded young adults. Students are encouraged to engage with the wide range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities on offer. We focus on building self-awareness and self-esteem in our students and encourage them to lead active healthy lives and maintain a balance between curricular challenges and physical activity – between work and play. We hope that theirs is a long and happy childhood here at Sha Tin.

In a time of increased international competition we recognise that good examination results alone will not secure places at prestigious universities, guarantee entry to professions or success in business. Students need to demonstrate a breadth of accomplishments, attributes and achievements if they are to succeed in their goals. Our collective responsibility is surely to support them in their journey?

Aldous Huxley commented that, “experience is not what happens to you. It is what you do with what happens to you.”

I hope that students make the most of their life at STC and as adults go on to use their experiences to lead sustainable and fulfilling lives and make the world a better place.

I look forward to having the opportunity of welcoming you to the school.

Monthly message from the Principal

December 14, 2011

I am writing at the end of a long and successful term here at Sha Tin Colllege. The pace of life and the scale of student achievement have continued to impress me throughout the term. Particular highlights of this edition of the newsletter include the recent production of Bugsy Malone, the Year 12 graduation evening and the raising of $145,000 by staff and students through the Stride For A Cure charity walk. It is on such occasions that we see the best of what Sha Tin College has to offer. As ever, the newsletter includes examples of further sporting success for college teams and individual student achievements – well done to everyone involved. I should like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support during my first term here at Sha Tin and to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas with family and friends. Best wishes

8th November, 2011

Welcome to the November newsletter. The main focus this month is an attempt to capture the range of activities and opportunities that students took part in during CAS week. I hope that you will be impressed with the extent and variety of activities on offer and share my view that students are very fortunate to benefit from the annual CAS week programme. I am very grateful to colleagues who put so much effort in to organising and leading the activities and to parents for their continued support. I am certain that our annual commitment to CAS week throughout the school is a significant factor in developing a breadth and roundedness to the educational experience of all students.

From an individual perspective, the highlight of this month’s newsletter is Thomas Gomersall’s achievement in winning the Brit Young Writers award. Our sincere congratulations to Thomas and best wishes for his future literary ventures. I am delighted that he has agreed to post his winning short story on the school website. Falconclaw is available for all to read and comes highly recommended – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

It was very enjoyable to see a very positive “House Spirit” in evidence throughout the swimming gala and many outstanding performances from individual students.

I hope that the descriptions and photographs in this month’s newsletter create a real sense of achievement and excitement  – the opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved and the excitement of anticipating CAS week 2012.

3rd October, 2011

Welcome to our first newsletter of the 2011-12 academic year and my first newsletter as Principal. Over the last two months I have been making every effort to get to know and understand the school and am very grateful for the warm and generous welcome I have received from students, staff and parents. My overwhelming impression is of a high-achieving and caring community with students at the heart of all that we do and the decisions we make. Long may that continue!

I have had the opportunity through the assembly programme to make students aware of my expectations and to issue them with individual challenges for the year ahead and their overall school career. I have been meeting with teaching and support colleagues individually to understand their perspectives, motivation and ambitions for the school. There is no doubting the calibre, talent and determination of colleagues and their desire to make Sha Tin College the school of first choice.

It is only right to pay tribute to everyone involved in last year’s outstanding public examination results – record levels set at both iGCSE and IB diploma level - my thanks and congratulations to students and teachers and to parents for their support.

Sha Tin College is a busy and thriving community and my hope is that every student will make the most of the opportunities on offer. We are currently building up to CAS week with a large and diverse range of activities planned that offer students a genuine breadth of experience. I hope that our monthly newsletters can act, not only as a summary of our activities and achievements, but also as an inspiration to students, encouraging them to engage fully in the life of the school. It is never too late to take up a new activity, hobby, sport or skill.

My challenge to students in relation to the newsletter is an ambition that every single one of them features in a newsletter at some point in their school career. I look forward to being able to share their achievements both individually and collectively in future issues.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.
