Learning Support

Learning Support

Upon entry to the College, the Learning Support Department (LS) identifies students with particular individual needs, including SEN, EAL and Gifted and Talented. Appropriate provision and/or support is then organised and put in place.

English for Academic Purposes (E.A.P.)

As a school with an international student body, we are conscious of the need to support those
students for whom English may be a second or even a third language. These may be very able
students and many are particularly gifted linguists. Our specialist EAL teachers provide small group
and in-class support to help students to acquire the technical vocabulary and academic language
needed to enable them to reach their full potential in an English-medium education.

Support is also provided for native English speaking students who need additional assistance
to strengthen their literacy skills.

Gifted and Talented

An identification process is in place for gifted and/or talented students in individual subject areas. Provision is then made through differentiation in mainstream classes and participation in CAS co-curricular activities which offer a wide range of enrichment experiences. The school also provides opportunities to take part in external competitions and programmes aimed at high achievers in specific subject areas.

S.E.N. (Special Educational Needs)

Sha Tin College has a Special Needs Co-ordinator within the LS Department, whose role is to ensure that the needs of students with learning diffculties are met in an appropriate way. The Co-ordinator and a team of teachers and Educational Assistants support students, either within the classroom or on an individual basis. Assistance is available in order to ensure that each individual may enjoy equality of opportunity.

Minor injuries are dealt with by our fully-qualified medical officer, Pushpa Gurung. With parents'
consent, serious cases are taken to the Casualty Department of the Prince of Wales Hospital. Parents
are asked to complete a medical record form at the beginning of the year to include, for example,
details of allergies. They should also inform us if their child/children regularly need to take prescribed
medicine during school hours. It is essential for students' safety that parents keep us fully informed of
illnesses which may, for example, affect participation in strenuous physical activity.

The Compass Programme
The Compass Programme is a learning support centre for students with special educational needs. This programme offers a unique opportunity for students to broaden their education and future potential as contributing and effective citizens in our community. The aim is to provide quality educational experiences that allow each individual to attain personal independence through a balanced academic and functional curriculum. An Individual Education Plan is developed for each student. Students are integrated into the school community in all aspects of school life that are suitable and enriching with an appropriate level of support.
